A good example of why this is the best show ever!
The writing on this show is second to none
I mean, as per usual, Aaron Sorkin and his writing along with the cinematography is brilliant. It's amazing how they can take one moment feel so honorable, so patriotic, and so worthy.
Hoo-Rah! Every veteran should get this same service.
I kind of wished they would've had the other homeless man who helped with the brother the night before also attending the funeral.
being from and living in a small town, and being a 22-year U.S. Navy veteran, i have had the opportunity to serve on honor guards for the funerals of several of my brothers-in-arms. presenting the folded ensign to the family member is always a situation of mixed emotions: proud, humbled, grieving... it runs the gamut. as others have said, this scene is so expertly presented. thank you to cast and crew.
Toby had a heart of pure gold and the size of Texas. I hate what they did to him in the end with being the one who leaked classified info
I think Liam was the trailblazer. He set the standard for Billys to come.
Its situations like this that drag this show away from a realistic perspective. Yet again Toby defies both policy and the President without consequence. It is not about taking care of our veterans, but instead uses them to show what a great group of people they are while conceding that these same people will refrain from any effort or policy to make sure that any others will receive the same deserved treatment.
Époustouflant ❤
An amazing moment for this series and television in general. The one gripe I have is this: when the flag is being presented, it is erroneously presented to Toby first. He signals that it should go to the man beside him, the deceased brother. This would not happen. The soldiers, sailors, and airmen that take part in military funerals take their responsibility very seriously. They would with absolute certainty know who should be presented the flag before the ceremony started. It’s a small error and done for television, I know. I feel it deserves pointing out though, not to criticize the show, but to highlight the dedication to duty those men and women have.
"Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier." Words spoken several hundred years ago and have always been true, both before and since. Thank you for your service, sir.
This is just about the best writing and acting in a tv series I have ever seen. It is an exquisite combination of acting, writing, music, photography and stinging rebuke as social commentary. It is as close to perfection as it is possible for a creator to be.
This show was absolutely beautiful
Very powerful , with the Drummer Boy being sung in the background.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
The West Wing is one of the few shows that stands the test of time. Same goes for NYPD Blue. Have watched both over the years.
I cried the first time and this time.
that there
We’ve all met people like Mrs. Landingham. A character with highest integrity. I wish that they never killed her, but by doing so it made it more honest show.
This is great…and then there’s Mandy.
Mandy, Mandy, Mandy …. The one character that just didn’t work!! The rest 👌
Beautiful, beautiful television. And funny: “Are we still in NATO?”
What a beautifully composed scene
This is one of my favorite episodes. Makes me cry every time.
I have seen this over and over and have come to the conclusion that this is the finest episode of a Great Great show.
Semper Fi.
An old Navy Veteran from the UK here. I have always admired the way the US Armed Forces honour their fallen colleagues this way. I attended 20 plus repatriation services in Afghanistan in 2007/08 and have kept every card from each service before the hercules took off from Camp Bastion bound for Brize Norton. I was 50 then, and they were all SO young. Watching this scene takes me back and is very moving. I live in hope parents will not suffer the loss of their young servicemen and women, but Ukraine/Gaza etc shows I am a fool to even hope.
You are not a fool, there will always be hope. Watch Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot, when you have a chance, thanks!
Fools do not change the world, for there are plenty of fools, and the world is stubborn. Idealists change the world because they don't care that what they ask is impossible. Your, sir, are not a fool.
The old girl is fantastic
It’s so relaxing to close my eyes and listen to and dream about life being TWW.
Love this episode.
"I can only hope sir". 5 simple words absolutely switched the moral high ground and power in this amazing scene. Sorkin a genius and the cast all producing career highlights.
I can never stop myself from weeping every time I see this - and I keep watching it
I’m a very conservative fellow who loved West Wing. Hated the politics. Loved the characters. But there was a value system. No better displayed in this episode. I get emotional everytime I watch it. Did not serve but was law enforcement. Attended more of these than I care to share.
I love this show
Why can’t we have a President like this ❤
when the practicality of the gesture, when questioned by a president who never served in the military, is ultimately swayed by a veteran who witnessed the sacrifices in war.
I once commented on Twitter this episode is the best 42 minutes of television drama ever produced. Toby (Richard Schiff) himself responded and I was beyond belief. It's a truly a magnificent piece of film art and I have tears every time I watch it - including today.
I'm a Brit who loves and revels in my native tongue (Shakespeare, Keats, Tennyson, Kipling etc).. but when Bartlett taps Toby on the shoulder, words are immaterial... empathy and communication to a completely new level. Bravo Aaron. Simply superb!
"You don't think every homeless veteran will come out of the woodwork" "I can only hope sir" 🇺🇸💜
A far cry from the total desecration of the Oval Office, of the White House, of soldiers/sailors/marines/airmen, of and the entire USA-- under the "reign" of the ignorant, selfish, shallow and demented sociopath.
I still cry when I see this episode...
This song. Toby's actions. Mrs. Landingham "admonishing" Toby. Bartlett's ikykik look. The burial. Fantastic 😢
Couldn't help notice that the clergyman character who lead the procession while the Marines special drill team did their stuff, was a Coast Guardsman in ceremonial blues... Interesting.
Best episode!
Hard to believe TV this good existed at one point.
It was simply the finest show ever on TV. I have every season and watch it every October before election session. To remind me of what we should have.
Amen
Sworkin I understand that you were a pain in the ass to work for. We can only hope you keep doing it!!!!
Brings me to teas ever time I see this scene.
